With the help of a watchful Rochesterite, police were able to stop two alleged burglars from stealing likely thousands of dollars of copper and steel wiring from the former AMPI building.

Rochester police were called about 8:20 p.m. Friday to the former AMPI plant, 700 First Ave. SE, for a report of a suspicious vehicle parked behind the building. The caller noted that the vehicle had been in the area multiple times and was now parked behind the building, Capt. Casey Moilanen said. Officers checked out the property, but didn't find anyone.

They were called back a short time later after receiving information there was a person on the east side of the building, near the loading dock. Officers located a cut in the chain link fence as well as in mesh at the loading dock and entered the building that way. Inside, officers located two men and arrested them.

Ren Degener, 55, and Chad Westby, 43, both of Rochester, were arrested on suspicion of third-degree burglary, first-degree damage to property and possession of burglary tools. The building's key holder inspected the building with police and determined a number of items were disturbed, damage or appeared prepared to be stolen.
