OCEAN COUNTY, NJ – An annual report released earlier this month by the FBI shows that Island Heights is the safest municipality in Ocean County. It’s also one of the smallest towns, with a population of just 1652 residents.
The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report is based on information submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. The collection of data allows for a strategic analysis based on population and reports on particular crimes.
Violent crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault make up one part of the statistical information. Offenses classified as property crimes on the UCR are burglary, larceny, and auto theft.
A comparison of the various communities is best looked at by the number of crimes per each 100,000 residents. For Island Beach, the crime rate translates to 423.7 per 100,000. None of the offenses were considered violent crimes.
Two other Ocean County municipalities with a population of less than 10,000 showed a crime rate of less than 500 per 100,000. Plumsted and Ocean Township were next in line as far as safe towns countywide with limited numbers of violent crimes.
Many of the smaller beach communities had higher crime rates. This is likely due to the influx of vacationers coming into town. Beach Haven, with a population listed of 1169, showed a crime rate of 12,061.6 when measured on the per 100,000 scale.
In Beach Haven, larceny represented a great percentage of the crimes reported. The UCR definition of larceny includes offenses such as shoplifting, pocket-picking and stealing a bicycle.
Barnegat’s numbers reveal it as the safest among other municipalities of its size. The comparison includes Point Pleasant Borough, Little Egg Harbor, Stafford, and Lacey. Barnegat’s crime rate is listed as 623.4 per 100,000 residents. Less than 13 percent of the reported offenses are classified as violent crimes.
"By leveraging our growing partnership with the community and the skills and hard work of our officers, we continue to keep Barnegat the safest of any comparable town in Ocean County," shared Barnegat Police Chief Keith Germain.
Only a few communities within Ocean County have populations in excess of 50,000. According to the UCR data, Jackson had the lowest crime rate of the larger communities with a crime rate of 733.6 on the 100,000 scale.
As far as violent crimes, the UCR shows a total of 8 murders countywide. Three each occurred in Brick and Manchester, one in Lakewood and one in Toms River. Ten arrests were made in conjunction with the murders.
Lakewood, the largest community in Ocean County, reported the highest number of violent crimes. Of the 148 offenses, 91 were related to aggravated assault.
Ocean County as a whole was determined to have a population of 592,460 residents. The overall crime rate was 1,087.8. For a complete breakdown of the municipalities and reported crimes, see the information outlined here.
