WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) -- The 2020 Annual Black Hawk County Sheriff's Report is out with a look at not just violent crime, but other crime statistics such as OWI's and the number of Mental Health Orders Served.

The report shows comparisons from the past three years. In his release, Sheriff Tony Thompson notes that although "calls for service and jail bookings were down (likely due to the pandemic) many crimes saw an increase in activity."

Those increases were marginal for some of the categories, and larger for incidents of sexual offenses, 16 in 2020 vs 3 the year prior, for instance. One of the notable jumps was in the number of OWI's, growing from 100 in 2019 to 214 OWI offenses in the year 2020. Drug violations also rose from 213 to 295 last year.

Thompson notes, "When people are couped (sic) up, held more closely together for longer periods of time, assaults, substance abuse crimes and sexual assaults can be anticipated to increase.  Our staff also increased their attention on drugs and drunken driving arrests to ensure roadway safety this past 12 months."
