COVID-19 case numbers continue to rise in Northland - Duluth News Tribune

COVID-19 case growth continues to creep up again in the Northland. On Friday, state health officials reported that another 80 Northland residents have tested positive for COVID-19.

Ten of those people live in Wisconsin's Ashland, Bayfield and Douglas counties.

The state of Minnesota reported nine new deaths from COVID-19 on Friday. None of those people lived in Northeastern Minnesota. Three of those people lived in a long-term care or assisted-living facility and one was in their late 40s.

New cases and seven-day averages in Northland counties:

  • Aitkin — 0; 0.4.
  • Carlton — 7; 2.9.
  • Cook — 1; 1.7.
  • Itasca — 18; 12.3.
  • Koochiching — 1; 0.9.
  • Lake — 1; 1.
  • St. Louis — 42; 27.7.
  • Ashland — 1; 0.9.
  • Bayfield — 0; 0.3.
  • Douglas — 9; 4.6.

In the last seven days, Cook County has recorded 12 new COVID-19 cases. Prior to that, the county had logged that many cases in the last two months combined.

Four of the people who tested positive are in their 20s, three are in their 30s, one is in their 40s and two each are in their 50s and 60s, according to an update on Cook County's coronavirus response webpage.

The state of Wisconsin reported six new deaths on Friday. None were reported in the three-county region of Northwestern Wisconsin.

Another 2,800 Northeastern Minnesota residents have had their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, exceeding 100,000 people vaccinated. Friday marked the ninth-highest single-day increase for the seven-county region.

Nearly 32% of the region's population has been vaccinated with at least one dose. Of those age 65 and older, nearly 79% of that population in Northeastern Minnesota has received at least one dose.

Another 400 residents of Ashland, Bayfield and Douglas counties have received their first COVID-19 vaccine. That brings the total to more than 21,700 people, or about 30% of the area's population.

  • Koochiching — 24.8%.
  • Lake — 30.1%.
  • St. Louis — 31.9%.

  • Bayfield — 38.4%
  • Douglas — 25.3%.
