SANTA CLARA — A building was vandalized with racial epithets directed at the Chinese community last week, Santa Clara police said.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying this man, who is suspected of writing racial epithets on the front door of a Chinese software company in Santa Clara on March 14 (image courtesy of the Santa Clara Police Department).

Police said officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Lakeside Drive for reports of vandalism on March 19.

They arrived to find the building was vacant at the time of the vandalism, but signage from the former tenant, a Chinese-language software company, was still visible, police said.

Security camera footage obtained by police revealed the crime occurred at 1:35 a.m. on March 14. Police said the video showed the suspect walking up to the front door and vandalizing it before leaving.

This is the second time the building has been targeted, police said.

On Jan. 19, the same suspect left an item inscribed with anti-Chinese epithets at the front door, police said.

“Though no crime was committed on this occasion, a tremendous amount of effort was put forth to identify and locate the person responsible,” police said in a statement.

Police were only able to give a partial description of the suspect, saying he was possibly a white man dressed in a black beanie, black face mask, black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black shoes. An image of the suspect has been released in the hopes someone might be able to identify him.
