MANISTEE — Manistee Area Public Schools received notification Tuesday that a Manistee Middle High School student tested positive for COVID-19.
In a communication sent out to MAPS families and staff, superintendent Ron Stoneman said the student was following quarantine protocols and any individual found through contact tracing to have been in close contact with the individual had been contacted and also placed in quarantine.
During contact tracing, officials work with a positive case to determine who may have been infected through exposure from close contact. A close contact is anyone deemed to have been within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes.
Most notifications of positive cases MAPS receives are self-reported. The district does not require or collect proof of positive test results and responds to notifications as reported out of an abundance of caution.
In the email sent out to staff and families, Stoneman encouraged everyone to remain vigilant in looking for COVID-19 symptoms through home screenings.
"Please remember that student temperatures are to be taken and symptoms monitored from home each school day," the email read. "Families are responsible for deciding if a student should be attending school based upon at-home monitoring each day. Should your student show symptoms they should be kept home (except to seek medical care), monitored and considered for testing."
There was no report of the school being closed as a result of the case.
