SAN JOSE — Police say they arrested a man Friday after he went on a “violent crime spree” that included a carjacking at knifepoint, a hit-and-run, and an assault on an older Filipino woman.

Around 11:45 a.m. Friday, San Jose police said officers were sent to the 200 block of S. Montgomery Street where a carjacking was reported.

The suspect forced the driver out of a commercial box truck at knifepoint, and when a “helpful citizen” tried to intervene, police said they “narrowly escaped being stabbed.”

After fleeing the area in the vehicle, police said the suspect was involved in a hit-and-run in the area of Capitol Expressway and Silver Creek Road.

The man abandoned the truck on a nearby residential street, then entered a home through an occupied garage and stole some tools, police said in a series of tweets Friday.

While leaving the area on foot, police said he encountered an elderly Filipino woman who was entering her car.

He struck the woman with a blunt object and demanded her car keys, but she was able to flee back into her residence and call for help, police said.

Officers were sent to the area and located the man who was still walking nearby, and he was arrested, police said.

“There are no indications this event was racially motivated, this was one man on a violent crime spree today,” police said.

Police didn’t immediately offer details about the suspect, and said the investigation into this series of incidents is ongoing.
