BENTON (WSIL) -- The Franklin County Sheriff's Department's is ready to help keep communities safe and informed with their new Crime Mapping website.
"Crime mapping allows anyone, any citizen, to log on to their webpage and to find the particular area where they live, for example, Franklin County, and view crime statistics within the county and where they occurred," said Franklin County Sheriff's Department's Chief Deputy Kyle Bacon.
The website uses crime reports from the sheriff's department and mines the data, so anyone can see what goes on in their neighborhood.
Deputies believe the tool can help lower crime rates in different communities.
"For example, if in my neighborhood or the area where I live, if there were a string of robberies, I may not know about it. But with the crime mapping feature, I can view that each day, I can get get email alerts about that information, and I become more self reliant and more aware about what's happening around me," said Bacon.
The tool allows people in the unincorporated areas of Franklin County to see what types of crimes are committed and how often.
But mostly, deputies believe the tool helps bridge the divide between citizens and law enforcement.
"We want to partner with people who are concerned about their neighborhoods and where they live and the safety of their families. And this is just another tool that we use that is available to the public, that can help them be more informed and contact us and work in cooperation with us to help reduce crime," said Bacon.
If you've tried using the crime map feature on your phone, you probably had some trouble.
Right now the tool's not supported on mobile browsers.
The company said they're working on a mobile app.
