Raleigh, N.C. — Nationwide, the number of reported crimes was down in 2020, when much of the country was in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In Raleigh, the crime rate dropped about 13% from 2019 to 2020. All research points to shutdown orders as the reason why. An example of how the stay-at-home orders affected crime: There were fewer people charged with impaired driving last year, likely a result of less traffic and people not going out to bars and restaurants.
Now, as businesses open up a bit more, it appears there’s an upward swing in reported incidents.
WRAL News looked at real-time data for crimes reported to Raleigh police, including property damage, crimes against other people like assault and crimes against society like drug violations.
So far this year, the weekend of April 9-11 had the most reported crime, with 436 incidents. Assaults, drug-related crimes, vandalism and larceny were the most reported.
More than 4,200 crimes were reported in March, which was the most since January 2020.
Three days at the end of March, after restrictions were lifted, were in the top five days for crime in all of 2021 so far.
