ANN ARBOR, MI – A man accused of committing a hate crime against a transgender woman five months ago in Ann Arbor is being freed from the Washtenaw County Jail while his criminal case progresses.

James Alan Greggs was granted a personal recognizance bond Tuesday, Nov. 23, freeing him from the Washtenaw County Jail where he was awaiting preliminary court proceedings for allegedly attacking a transgender woman in what has been described by prosecutors as a hate crime.

His attorney, Saundra White, filed a bond motion with the court which was approved by 14A District Court Judge Cedric Simpson after hearing no objection from prosecutors.

Greggs, 59, was arraigned June 15 on one felony count each of assault with a dangerous weapon, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and ethnic intimidation following an investigation by the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Prosecutors alleged that on June 8 in Ann Arbor, Greggs cut the victim with a box cutter, hit her in the face and strangled her while disparaging her for being a transgender woman.

He then allegedly grabbed her breasts in an effort to humiliate her, according to a statement from the Fair Michigan Justice Project.

It is believed Greggs assaulted the victim because she is a transgender woman, according to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bond was previously set at $50,000 cash or surety following his June arrest. Greggs had been in jail since his arrest, records show.

Greggs is scheduled for a probable cause conference hearing Dec. 16. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
