A 44-year-old man is facing bias crime charges after two people were attacked Friday with a pair of scissors on a Clackamas County MAX platform, officials said.

Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a disturbance at the Clackamas Town Center MAX station about 6:45 p.m., officials said in a news release.

When the deputies arrived, they found several people restraining a man who appeared to be intoxicated, according to the sheriff’s office.

Witnessed told investigators that the man, later identified as Joseph Haddenham, had confronted the two victims, ages 24 and 25, and attacked them with a pair of scissors, the sheriff’s office said.

Both victims sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Haddenham was arrested and, during an interview, made statements to investigators that indicated the attack may have been motivated by race. The sheriff’s office said both victims were Pacific Islanders, but did not elaborate on what Haddenham said.

Haddenham was taken to a hospital for injuries then to Clackamas County Jail after he was released. He was being held on charges of menacing, criminal mischief, assault, unlawful use of a weapon and committing a bias crime. His bail was set at $548,000, according to the sheriff’s office.
