CENTRAL ILLINOIS (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Across the country, people came together for National Night Out Against Crime and that includes many location in Central Illinois.
It was a hands-on experience tonight at Martin Luther King Jr. Park as Peoria Police came out to meet anyone and everyone enjoying the great conditions.
Organizers also had the snacks ready and the new Chief of Police was there as well to put things into perspective.
"We're breaking bread together, right? We're having a soda," Chief Eric Echevarria, Peoria Police Department, said. "We're having a sandwich. We're having a hot dog. It's not about anything else but some fellowship."
The chief hopes this interaction, though, will lead to better relationships and hopefully, better outcomes on the streets.
Washington also hosting a gathering for National Night Out Against Crime. People packed Oak Ridge Park for the event. Live music played as kids got hands on with police and fire vehicles, and some even got to dunk an officer in a dunk tank.
Officer Dramane Taylor says tonight's event gave families a chance to meet police officers and other first responders in a neutral setting.
"When you come out here and you see an officer smiling and interacting with adults and children, that's a different look," Taylor said. "We're people too and we like to have fun just as well, and we want everybody to be safe like we want to go home every night as well."
Tuesday marked Washington's second National Night Out Against Crime gather, and Taylor says, so far, it was a big success.
