CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio reported more than 5,000 new coronavirus infections in a 24-hour period twice within the past seven days, the first time that’s happened in seven months.
The Ohio Department of Health reported 5,395 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday and 5,204 new cases on Saturday. The last time the state reported a daily increase of more than 5,000 new cases twice within the same week was Jan. 27 and 28.
In total, Ohio reported 29,140 cases for the one-week period ending Saturday. The state reported 20,010 new cases over the prior one-week period ending Aug. 21.
The Delta variant of the coronavirus has driven a dramatic increase in infections over the past two months, even though the COVID-19 vaccine is available to anyone over the age of 12. Ohio reported just 1,743 new cases for the one-week period ending July 3.
Hospitalizations also continue to increase throughout the state. There were 2,157 coronavirus patients in Ohio hospitals on Saturday, up from 1,817 one week ago.
Saturday’s total is nearly 10 times higher than earlier this summer, when there were just 200 patients in Ohio hospitals on July 9.
Among the patients in hospitals, 638 were in intensive care units on Saturday, up from 562 one week ago and 199 on Aug. 1.
The state also reported 110 coronavirus deaths over the past week, an increase from 75 one week earlier. However, the reporting of deaths often lags for several weeks or even months, so deaths totals may not be a reflection of the most recent trends.
Overall, Ohio has reported 20,799 coronavirus deaths during the pandemic.
There is one bright spot among the current surge. Over the past week, Ohio passed the milestone of having more than 60% of its eligible population receiving at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. The figure stood at 60.5% as of Saturday.
However, statistics show the number of people receiving their first vaccine dose has declined in recent weeks. The state reported another 66,905 people received their first dose over the past week, fewer than the 70,006 and 72,225 reported over the prior two weeks.
The 10 Ohio counties with the greatest number of cases per 100,000 residents are in rural areas. The list is led by Scioto County in south-central Ohio, with 714.3 cases per 100,000 residents as of Thursday.
