Massachusetts health officials on Friday reported 1,459 new coronavirus cases, the largest single-day increase since April amid a continued surge caused by the contagious delta variant.
Hospitalizations have been increasing following several weeks of higher infection counts amid the more highly contagious mutant. There are 467 COVID patients in the hospital, an increase of 28 from Thursday with 108 in the ICU and 49 on ventilators.
The overall count of 467 patients is more than five times the count of 80 patients in Bay State hospitals on July 4. The seven-day average of hospitalizations is 412, up from around 100 in early July.
The daily average of new virus cases is now 929 infections, which is more than 14 times the lowest average of 64 daily cases in late June. Prior to Friday, Wednesday’s count of 1,452 cases was the highest daily count since late April.
The daily average percent positivity on virus tests is now 2.81%, a jump from the lowest average percent positivity of 0.31% in June.
State health officials also reported six new COVID-19 deaths Friday, bringing the state’s total recorded death toll to 18,175.
The seven-day average of daily deaths is now 4.6, up from the record-low daily death average of 1.1 in July.
The state reported 68 new COVID-19 hospital admissions on one day last week, which was the highest single-day count since April.
The state’s vaccination campaign is continuing forward at a slow rate. As of Friday, 4.44 million Massachusetts residents had been fully vaccinated against coronavirus, which is about 63% of the state.
More than 4.64 residents have gotten at least one dose, about 66% of the population. One drawing remains for the state’s VaxMillions initiative to win $1 million or a $300,000 scholarship. Four rounds of winners have already been selected.
