Charges announced Wednesday against three suspects highlight the gun violence that Pontiac's deputies want to quell, said Lt. Steve Troy of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

In one incident, both the alleged shooter and his getaway driver wore masks – now a common sight for police amid COVID-19 precautions, Troy said. In a second shooting, a youth with no criminal record is charged with first-degree murder.

Even though they wore masks, detectives identified suspects in the first incident -- a serious but non-fatal shooting at a trailer park at the city’s far north end, on Walton Blvd. between Baldwin and Joslyn roads.

The victim, 18, told deputies he was playing basketball in the street at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday when he heard gunshots and felt pain in his side. He drove himself to a hospital where doctors found he’d been shot repeatedly in the torso. He is in stable condition, according to a news release.

Detectives questioned people throughout the area and, around midnight, got a crucial tip to a home three miles south, on the outskirts of downtown Pontiac, where officers arrested Sergio Alvarez, 18, and Pedro Hernandez, 19, both residents of the city.

According to the news release, both face a charge of assault with intent to murder, a life felony, as well as other gun charges. Using a search warrant, police entered the home to find masks, ammunition and the rifle they think was used in the shooting. Ironically, investigators don’t think the victim was their intended target – he was “shot by accident,” Troy said. Both suspects were arraigned Wednesday, given cash bonds of $50,000 and held in the Oakland County Jail.

In a second weekend shooting in Pontiac, the victim was not so lucky. At about 7:20 p.m. Sunday, sirens screamed as deputies, EMS and firefighters all responded to a shooting in a parking lot just north of Perry Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

They arrived to find the prone body of 26-year-old Jaylen Harris who, tied by telemetry to doctors, was pronounced dead. Officers soon got a tip that the gunman fled to a nearby apartment in the area's large housing complex. The victim's name was not released.

A housing manager showed them surveillance video that revealed the shooting as well as the gunman's escape path. Deputies found the suspect and took him into custody along with others “who were present at the time of the shooting,” the news release said.

Charged Wednesday with first-degree murder was James Kincaid, 23, of Pontiac. After a judge denied setting a bond, Kincaid was being held in the Oakland County Jail. He had no prior criminal record, according to investigators.
