New York, NY—The NYPD 19th Precinct CompStat report for the week of July 20 to July 26, 2020 reveals both an increase and decrease in some crime complaint categories, depending on the comparisons over a period of time, but all major crime categories continue to trend downward. Let’s take a look.
For the serious crime categories of murder and rape: there was no murder or rape in the week to date, and over a 28-day period there was one rape. For the year to date, in 2020 the 19th Precinct reported 1 murder and 5 rapes, in comparison to 2019, when there was no reported murder and 12 rapes, a 58.3 percentage decline in rapes compared to 2020.
The CompStat report also reveals the percentage change over a 2-year, 10-year and 27-year period compared to the week of July 20 to July 26. So, for murder there was no change over 2 and 10 years, but there was a 66.7 percentage decline over 27 years when there were five murders in 1993, 6 in 1998 and 1 in 2001.
But there were more instances of rape going back over 2 years, 10 years and 27 years when compared to the week of July 20 to July 26. In 1993 there were 30 reported cases of rape, as well as 17 reported in 1998 and 9 in 2001, which represents a 44.4 percentage decline over two years compared to aforementioned week, a 16.7 percentage decline over 10 years and a 70.6 reduction over 27 years.
Also, there was a significant increase in the number of reported grand larceny cases: 32 for the week of July 20 to July 26, which is one less case compared to the same week last year. For a 28-day period there have been 98 cases, compared to 138 in 2019, a 29 percent reduction. And for year to date there have been a total of 662 case of grand larceny, compared to 878 at the end of 2019, a 24.6 percent reduction.
To provide a historical perspective, grand larceny rates have significantly decreased. For example, there were 5,406 of reported cases 30 years ago in 1990, followed by 3,792 cases in 1993, 2,167 in 1998 and 2,208 cases in 2001.
Another crime category that has significantly decreased over the past 30 years is burglary. For the aforementioned week, there were seven reported burglaries, compared to five one year ago. Over a 28-day period, there have been 20, compared to 25 during the same period last year. And year to date, there have been 211 cases, which is a 24.6 percentage decline of 128 cases reported last year.
Again, a historical perspective demonstrates a downward trajectory: there were 3,695 burglaries in 1990, 3,019 in 1993, 1,028 in 1998, 701 in 2001 and 223 in 2019.
