Pennsylvania coronavirus cases continued to surge this weekend with 1,054 on Saturday and 800 on Sunday.

This brings the state’s total to 107,425 cases of COVID-19 since the virus was first detected in the state in March. The 1,213 cases reported Friday marked the biggest one-day jump in positives since May.

With four new fatalities reported Sunday, the state’s COVID-19 death toll stands at 7,118, according to the daily report from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Locally, case rates in the Lehigh Valley have held relatively low and steady. Although, the number of new cases over the last two weeks have been rising.

Here are your Pennsylvania coronavirus updates for July 26, 2020.

Pa. coronavirus outbreak

Pennsylvania is now averaging 914 new cases per day over the last week as July comes to a close. At the start of the month, it was 579.

The 800 new cases reported on Sunday are quite high for a weekend, when there is typically a lag in reporting results from commercial testing labs.

The state continues to ramp up its testing capacity. There were 6,384 positive cases out of the 156,316 total tests administered over the last week ending Saturday.

Once again, many of the cases were reported in the counties with Pennsylvania’s two biggest cities. Philadelphia had 148 new positives reported Sunday, while Pittsburgh’s Allegheny County had 133.

The state’s reporting for Philadelphia continues to significantly lag behind the city’s own data.

Like much of the nation, Pennsylvania is seeing a jump in the number of COVID-19 cases in people 49 and younger, especially for 19 to 24-year-olds.

Young people represent more than 16% of the cases seen in the northeast region, which includes the Lehigh Valley. The 19 to 24 age bracket represented only 6% of April’s cases.

The health department estimates that 75% of Pennsylvania coronavirus patients have so far recovered.

Though more cases are being found in younger adults, people aged 65 and older continue to represent the majority of hospitalizations and deaths – nursing home residents account for about 18% of the state’s cases but 68% of deaths.

About 7,939 of the total cases have been in health care workers.

Coronavirus in the Lehigh Valley

The Lehigh Valley had 107 new COVID-19 cases Saturday and Sunday and one coronavirus-related death, per this weekend’s state data.

The two-county region now totals 8,434 cases and 624 deaths. That breaks down to:

  • 4,688 cases and 335 deaths in Lehigh County, an increase of 64 cases and one death on Saturday and Sunday.
  • 3,746 cases and 289 deaths in Northampton County, an increase of 43 cases and no deaths.

The state report lags slightly behind what the counties themselves are reporting, which as of Friday was a combined 629 coronavirus deaths.

A state system for monitoring the weekly progress of individual counties shows different trajectories for the counties. Compared to last week, Lehigh County has shown a drop in newly confirmed cases (129 to 104) and rate of new cases per 100,000 residents (35% to 28.3%). Northampton County has seen a slight rise in those categories, from 79 new cases to 87, and an increase in the incidence rate from 25.9% to 28.5%.

Northampton County on Thursday announced its new drive-through testing center will open Monday at Coordinated Health, 3100 Emrick Blvd. in Bethlehem Township, with hours of operation 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and plans for twice-monthly Saturday hours 9 a.m. to noon. A physician’s order will not be required but to be eligible for testing individuals must report or display one or more CDC-recognized symptoms of a COVID-19 infection.
