Shreveport Police Department discuss tactics to better address violent crime - Shreveport Times

The Shreveport Police Department held a news conference Monday afternoon to address the city's violent crime and how it plans to deal with it.

Some tactics mentioned include a violent crime task force and reducing response to non-criminal calls for service which will allow officers to focus on crime and be more proactive in efforts to prevent the crime. An example would be police responding to private property accidents if there are no injuries or damages to private property.

"Those involved would just simply exchange information, contact and insurance agency. That one change in procedure could reduce the need to respond to hundreds if not thousands of calls per year, extra time that could be spent on more pertinent matters," Shreveport Police Chief Ben Raymond said of non-criminal offenses.

Caddo-Shreveport Crime Stoppers is also renewing its "End the Silence, Stop the Violence” campaign, which will pay citizens a minimum of $750 for tips that lead to the seizure of illegal weapons.

Raymond said the department is about 80 officers down, to date, and short about 36 officers on patrol.

Raymond said this year the department has had more resignations, terminations and retirements than they have historically -- and believes there are a combination of factors that could have contributed to this. He said most officers he's aware of leaving have found careers at other agencies or even in other fields that they found to be better suited for them.

He said the department is looking into equipment purchases to provide body cameras to officers over the next couple of months, new tasers, and at some point a new report management system that will allow officers to type their reports in the field versus having to hand write them.
