TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — The Tompkins County Health Department announced ten new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, lifting active confirmed infections in the county back into the double digits, a level not seen locally since June 16.
Five of the ten new cases are related to out-of-state travel and four are related to a known case at a local Fourth of July gathering where social distancing and mask-wearing were not observed. TCHD announced on Friday an uptick in cases tied to travel and a holiday party. One case is connected to an active positive case with all close contacts identified. The county has completed contact tracing for all new cases and none represent an exposure to the general public, TCHD said in a release Tuesday evening.
"The recent increase in positive cases in our community is concerning, we have to continue taking this virus seriously and doing what we can to stop it from continuing to spread in Tompkins County. We've all worked hard to keep our numbers low and to help protect our friends and families, we can't let that hard work go to waste by not following the guidance," said Tompkins County Public Health Director Frank Kruppa.

TCHD has been resistant to sharing more identifying information than necessary in the interest of protecting the medical privacy of patients, but, according to Kruppa, but said that showing how the virus spreads and how quickly it can happen is key to keeping numbers low locally.
"We have not previously released this level of information on positive cases to protect people's privacy. However, it is important to share the nature of how these individuals were exposed to illustrate the potential impact of not taking this seriously. COVID-19 is still a disease that can spread rapidly. I am hopeful that everyone will continue evaluating their own risk and the risk they are putting on others each time they go out."
Leslyn McBean-Clairborne, chair of the Tompkins County Legislature, echoed Kruppa's call not to be lulled into a false sense of security because numbers have been low in Tompkins County recently.

"This recent uptick in cases shows the importance of not becoming complacent. Wearing masks, keeping distance, and refraining from unnecessary travel are critical to keeping ourselves, our families, and our neighbors healthy and safe," she said. "We can't begin to relax because the virus is still spreading in our community. We all have a part in stopping the spread, and even while many facets of our community open up, we need to stay vigilant and act with caution and concern for the safety of ourselves and others."
While TCHD says that none of the ten new cases represent exposures to the public and are not calling for people to seek testing, individuals presenting symptoms or with concerns about being exposed may seek testing at the Cayuga Health Sampling Site, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To pre-register, call Cayuga Health Call Center at 607-319-5708, or cayugahealth.org
