According to Dana Cheney, chair of the City Appearance Board, businessmen near Francis Street are not happy. Crime near Gerideau and Francis Streets has caused concern.
Mark Wysong owns the BP station and car wash on the corner of Hampton Street and Robertson Blvd. Wysong and Dana Cheney have started working with Keep Colleton Beautiful to begin a new program that will hopefully deter crime in those areas — and they need your help.
The program is called Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). This approach of crime prevention uses urban and architectural design and management of built and natural environments. “If we give the nearby residents something to take pride in, then it is less likely that crime will take place there,” Cheney said.
CPTED strategies, in a nutshell, believe that if you beautify a crime-ridden area, then less crime will occur there because residents will be proud of their properties and refuse to allow criminals to enter the area. This has worked in many communities across the nation. Cheney and Wysong are hoping this will happen here as well.
They began the program by working on Oct. 31 to clean half of the property of a Francis Street home that had wooden pallets used as fencing, and debris and trash piled up. Wysong used his own money to purchase fencing and volunteers helped install it, as well as clean up. The difference was remarkable.
“We are hoping to clean up some property and areas near Francis Streets and Gerideau Streets this Saturday on Nov. 14 beginning at 9 a.m.,” said Cheney. “We need help to clean up some acreage and maybe build fences, so we need all of the help we can get. We welcome anyone who is willing to help us try out this new program.”
Cheney says that gloves, pickers and vests are provided for all volunteers.
“This is an entrance to our city, and it needs to be beautiful. Please contact me at 843-542-6222 if you have questions or are willing to volunteer,” he said.
