SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Earlier this week, Covid-19 trends alarmed state officials to the point of clamping down further on restrictions.

With other states shutting down again to combat the virus’ spread, many residents are wary that restrictions could get even stricter, should trends continue.

Signs of panic-buying are already re-emerging, with many local stores running low on toilet paper and other essential supplies.

So what exactly are the Covid-19 numbers in the region? Let’s take a look:

Case count: While not a perfect indicator, the number of new daily cases has taken an upward turn statewide in recent weeks. Just before Governor Roy Cooper’s announcement Monday, the state logged its highest-ever single day case count on Sunday, Nov. 29, with 4,514 new cases. Daily case counts tend to fall along a zig-zag pattern, but averaged over several days, continue to trend upward compared to previous weeks.

New Hanover County has had a fairly steady rate of new daily cases, averaging 67 over a seven-day period ending Wednesday. Earlier this month on Nov. 10, the county reported a seven-day average of 45 new cases daily. During the first two weeks of October, the county was averaging 28 cases per day, whereas the first two weeks of September saw an average of 48 per day.

Hospitalizations: Statewide hospitalizations are continuing to peak. Tuesday, the state had 1,811 people hospitalized for the virus. This broke the previous record, set Monday with 1,601 people hospitalized. Nearly all hospitals are reporting data to NCDHHS.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center is reporting 31 new daily Covid-19 patients on average, as of Nov. 20. The hospital’s next update is due Nov. 30.

In all, at least 796 people have been hospitalized at NHRMC for Covid-19. Nearly 660 have been discharged and 110 have died.

Hosptial beds, capacity: N. C. Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen said Monday that many hospitals would soon consider reducing elective procedures to ensure capacity for Covid-19 patients.

Tuesday, a record number of 247 confirmed Covid-19 positive patients were hospitalized statewide.

Of the ICU beds reported, the state is at 80% ICU bed capacity, with 535 empty beds (1,176 are unreported). This is a slight uptick from figures reported Monday.
