Connecticut State Police were involved in a months-long investigation into a theft ring that stole 10 personal watercrafts, eight all-terrain vehicles, 10 trailers, four boats and three excavators in New England, state and federal authorities said.

State troopers and officers assigned to the Stafford Resident Trooper’s Office launched an investigation into a larceny in July after the theft of several expensive powersports recreational vehicles from local areas.

“This case rapidly evolved into an in-depth, lengthy multi-jurisdictional investigation, spanning several months and multiple states,” state police said Tuesday.

Federal authorities said three Bobcat excavators, 10 personal watercrafts, four boats, eight all-terrain vehicles and 10 trailers were stolen. The items were valued at almost $700,000.

Individuals in Providence, R.I., were identified as part of a well-organized theft ring that specialized in stealing that specific type of equipment, police said.

Investigators in Connecticut worked with law enforcement in New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts to gather evidence, confessions and other information, state police said.

The U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island led the investigation.

A grand jury indicted nine suspects. More indictments are expected soon, state police said.

The federal indictment alleges that the nine suspects, often using rented and stolen trucks, hauled away stolen excavators, boats, personal watercrafts, ATVs and trailers from businesses in Waterford, Vernon and Stafford. The suspects did the same in towns and cities in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the indictment states.

The individuals then sold the stolen equipment, the indictment claims. The alleged crimes spanned from November 2019 through July.

One Connecticut resident, 40-year-old Irvin W. McLaughlin Jr., was charged in the 13-count indictment, which charged all defendants with interstate transportation of stolen property, receipt of stolen goods, and conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property.

The remaining defendants are Jose A. “Tuto” Montes, 36, of Cranston, R.I.; Krystal K. Disano, 26, of Sarasota, Fla.; Sorina Cruz, 43, of Cranston, R.I.; Daniel J. Guerriero, 34, of North Scituate, R.I.; Ronald S. Mosca, 48, of Sarasota, Fla.; Efrain A. Lopez, 32, of Providence, R.I.; Jared Santiago, 28, of Providence, R.I.; and Luis M. Morales, 37, of Providence, R.I.
