The wife of a man accused of killing two people during a 2017 crime spree in Colorado and Utah pleaded guilty Monday in the killing of Golden resident Mitchell Ingle.
Kathleen Boutain, 26, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and reckless manslaughter; 19 other counts against her were dismissed as part of the plea deal, according to online court records.
Boutain and her husband, Austin Boutain, 27, have now both pleaded guilty in Ingle’s killing, which happened after a night of partying and prompted the Boutains to flee to Utah, where Austin Boutain killed a University of Utah student during a botched carjacking.
The couple was homeless when they met Ingle and joined the 63-year-old in his Golden trailer to drink whiskey and smoke marijuana in October 2017, according to an affidavit.
As the trio hung out inside the trailer, Ingle suggested all three could have sex, which offended Austin Boutain, he later confessed. Austin and Kathleen Boutain waited until Ingle fell asleep, then Austin Boutain tried to kill Ingle by shooting him with a crossbow.
He missed — the shot hit Ingle’s wrist — and the man woke up and ran to the bathroom. As Ingle reached for the medicine cabinet, Austin Boutain came up behind the man and slit his throat, cutting himself in the process.
Kathleen Boutain bandaged her husband’s wound and helped him as they stole Ingle’s guns and clothing and fled in Ingle’s pickup truck.
The couple drove to Utah, where they ditched the stolen truck and were looking for a new mode of transportation when Austin Boutain tried to carjack University of Utah student ChenWei Guo, 23. Austin Boutain shot and killed Guo during the attempted carjacking.
Austin Boutain was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in Guo’s death. Kathleen Boutain, who was not with her husband when he killed Guo, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property in connection with the killing and was sentenced to a year in jail in Utah, according to the Deseret News.
In Colorado, she faces between two and six years in prison on the reckless manslaughter charge and between 10 and 32 years for the robbery. She will be sentenced Jan. 4.
