CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia dropped to its lowest total since November 11 on Tuesday.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reported 8,528 active virus cases in the Mountain State in its daily report after adding 285 cases in the past 24 hours. On November 11, the state saw 8,187 active cases of COVID-19.

Active case totals have dropped nearly by than 16,000 cases in 30 days. Active case total was 24,479 on January 23.

Hospitalizations continue to hover around 300 at 296 on Tuesday. Patients in the ICU totaled 78 and 35 were on ventilators.

The DHHR reported 11 COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours including an 83-year old female from Wyoming County, a 60-year old female from Mercer County, an 86-year old female from Randolph County, a 59-year old male from Lewis County, a 75-year old male from Preston County, a 79-year old male from Mercer County, a 77-year old female from McDowell County, an 86-year old female from Lewis County, a 103-year old male from Mercer County, a 70-year old female from Mercer County, and a 70-year old female from Mingo County.

The statewide death total since the pandemic began is 2,274. The United States surpassed 500,000 total deaths on Monday since the pandemic began in March 2020.

“Today is another difficult day in our fight against COVID-19,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. “As we work to slow the growth of this virus in West Virginia, we extend our deepest sympathies to these families.”

The daily positivity test rate is 3.32% and the cumulative percent positivity is 5.50% as of Tuesday.

272,007 first doses of the vaccine have been administered in the state as of Tuesday, an addition of 1,766.
