When you're building a new desktop PC, the last component expected to be a fire risk is the case, but NZXT has proved even that can catch fire under the right circumstances.

As OC3D reports, LA-based hardware manufacturer NZXT has stopped selling its H1 PC enclosure because there's a risk it can catch fire. As the H1 Safety Recall explains, "The two screws that attach the PCIe Riser assembly to the chassis may cause an electrical short circuit in the printed circuit board that may overheat and create the possibility of a fire hazard."

YouTube channel Mark's Tech uploaded the video below demonstrating what happens when the H1 case shorts, making it clear why this is a serious problem. Reddit user EV-Simon posted photos of what happened to his H1 case, demonstrating the damage caused.

Johnny Hu, CEO of NZXT, has apologized to customers with a message on the company's blog. As well as confirming H1 case owners can request free repair kits and guidance, he also promised the company will institute, "more robust and thorough design processes. From the initial designs, QA, to additional testing, we’re committed to quality in both our products and our response to your concerns."

It's now possible to request a repair kit directly from NZXT and there's a walkthrough video explaining how to replace the PCIe Riser assembly once you have the kit. It's worth noting you'll need a screwdriver and 5.5mm nut wrench or pliers to complete the repair.

If you need to keep using your PC while waiting for the repair kit to arrive, NZXT offers a temporary solution which requires removing the graphics card and then removing the lower riser card retention screw from the case. An explanation and image of exactly what to do is available on the blog.
