Poway crime down 22 percent in 2020 - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Poway saw significant decreases in property crimes in 2020, while violent crime had a small uptick, according to the Automated Regional Justice Information System.

Reported crimes overall were down about 22 percent in 2020, with 419 reported crimes. In 2019, Poway had 541 crimes reported, according to ARJIS. Overall property crime and thefts were also down in 2020. Violent crime saw a small increase of two additional reported crimes compared to the year before, for a total of 53.

Violent crimes include murder, rape, robberies (armed and strong arm) and aggravated assaults. Property crimes include burglaries (residential and non-residential), thefts (less than or equal to $400 and greater than $400) and motor vehicle thefts.

Reported thefts were down almost 31 percent, with 245 crimes reported in 2020 compared to 354 in 2019. For thefts less than or equal to $400, there were 27 fewer crimes reported, with 109 in 2020. There were 82 fewer thefts greater than $400 reported, for a total of 136 crimes. There were 37 motor vehicle thefts, eight fewer than reported in 2019.

Reported burglaries were down about 8 percent overall, with seven fewer crimes in 2020 compared to 2019. There were 84 burglaries reported in 2020 and 91 in 2019. There were also eight fewer residential burglaries reported, with 27 in 2020 compared to 35 in 2019. There were 57 reported non-residential burglaries, one more than in 2019.

There were 53 violent crimes reported in Poway in 2020, which is about a 4 percent increase from 2019’s total of 51. There were no murders in Poway in 2020, compared to two murders reported in 2019. Lori Gilbert-Kaye was killed in the Chabad synagogue shooting in April 2019, while Michael Walker was killed in August 2019 when a bullet fired in a neighboring apartment traveled through the wall and struck him while he was sleeping.

Poway saw two fewer aggravated assaults reported in 2020, 33 compared to 35 in 2019. Aggravated assault is classified by ARJIS as an attack on a person for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury.

There were four reported rapes in 2020, compared to two in 2019. There were also three additional armed robberies, for a total of six crimes reported in 2020. Strong arm robbery had one additional crime reported, with 10 in 2020. Armed robbery involves a weapon, while strong arm robbery is robbery committed with a threat of force or intimidation without a weapon.

February had 58 reported crimes, the most out of the entire year. Of those, 47 were property crimes and 11 were violent crimes. November was the next highest month, with 44 reported crimes, including 38 property crimes. September had the fewest crimes reported with 24. Of these, 19 were property crimes. Following September was April, with 27 reported crimes, and July, with 29.
