Riverside County saw a slight rise in coronavirus numbers, data released Tuesday, April 20, show.

On Tuesday, the county’s adjusted case rate was 4.5 new cases per day per 100,000 residents — up from 3.6 cases the week before, and 3.5 two weeks ago.

The county on Tuesday reported 301 more cases and 19 more deaths from the day before, according to its coronavirus dashboard. Eighty-two virus patients were in the hospital.

The county’s overall case rate and positivity rates “have ticked up just slightly,” Kim Saruwatari, the county’s director of public health, told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

“We do think that that is to be expected given some of the re-openings, spring break, some of the recent holidays, so we’re keeping a close eye on that,” she said.

The county remains in the orange, or moderate risk, tier according to the state’s pandemic reopening framework.

The adjusted case rate means 779 Riverside County residents tested positive in the week ending April 10 — up from 617 people the week before. The data lags because it’s based on when a person got tested or started feeling symptoms, and those test results take time to get into the system.

The threshold for a potential move back to the red tier would be a case rate of 6.0, or more new cases per day per 100,000 residents, a positivity rate above 5.0% and a health equity rate above 5.3%.

More than 496,000 county residents have been fully vaccinated.

Here are the latest numbers as of Tuesday, according to county and state public health officials.

Riverside County

Confirmed cases: 297,620 total, up 301 from Monday, April 19, averaging 117 reported per day in the past week

Deaths: 4,547 total, up 19 from Monday, averaging six reported per day in the past week

Hospital survey: 82 confirmed and 23 suspected patients hospitalized Monday, including 14 confirmed and four suspected patients in the ICU, with 16 of 21 facilities reporting. The number of confirmed patients is down 14% from a week earlier.

Tests: 2,863,772 total, up 4,117 from Monday, averaging 7,149 reported per day in the past week

Recovered cases: 291,022 total, up 41 from Monday, averaging 139 per day in the past week

Vaccinations: The county says 1,444,492 doses have been administered, with 496,156 residents fully vaccinated, as of Monday.

Reopening plan tier: Orange (moderate risk level; some indoor business operations are open with modifications) based on these metrics as of Tuesday:

  • New cases per day per 100,000 residents: 4.5
  • Case rate adjusted for testing volume: 4.5
  • Test positivity rate: 2.3% (2.9% in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods)
  • What’s next: To advance to the yellow tier where more businesses can open or expand capacity, the county would need an adjusted case rate below 2.0 and a positivity rate below 2.0% for the whole county and 2.2% in disadvantaged neighborhoods for two consecutive weeks, and to have been in the orange tier for three weeks. Riverside County moved to the orange tier April 6. If metrics get worse, the county could move back into the more restrictive red tier.
