SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco Police Chief William Scott and Mayor London Breed shared crime statistics for this year in San Francisco and addressed safety priorities for the city during an event on Monday.

According to the chief's statistics, gun violence has almost doubled from this time last year in San Francisco, with 119 cases this year and 59 in 2020. This includes both fatal and nonfatal shootings.

The police chief also discussed robberies during the event and referenced some of the now-viral videos that show alleged crimes in San Francisco.

"Videos drive perception," he said.

According to the latest report, the number of robberies in San Francisco has gone down each year since 2018 with 1,123 cases in 2021.

Chief Scott says police presence in the city is the "tried and true" way to decrease robberies.

"Police officers in the streets drive down robberies," he said.

According to the data released Monday, the number of sexual assault cases in San Francisco are far below previous years, with 88 so far in 2021, according to the data. The chief said SFPD recorded 111 sexual assault cases in 2020.

Mayor Breed spoke at the start of Monday's press conference, addressing the widely-circulated videos showing alleged crime in San Francisco. She said what often doesn't go viral are the arrests made in connection to these crimes.

"What is not getting the attention is the fact that when you come to San Francisco and commit a crime, you will be arrested," she said.

"At the end of the day we have to make sure that accountability is a part of this," the mayor went on to say.

She said San Francisco has made an "unprecedented investment" in crime and violence prevention as well as crisis teams to help those with mental illness in the city.

"All of these things are part of our network addressing public safety," Breed said.

This crime report comes as San Francisco sees numerous cases of retail theft, including a now-viral case at Neiman Marcus and an incident at Walgreens.

Because of crime, Target also announced recently it would be closing stores in San Francisco early. Walgreens has also closed several stores permanently in the city due to crime.
