SPRINGFIELD — The city’s overall crime rate dropped for the seventh year in a row, while violent crime as a separate category increased slightly, according to the latest FBI crime report issued Friday.
The annual report, “Crime in the United States,” was released by the U.S. Department of Justice and indicated the overall crime rate decreased nationwide, but like in Springfield there was a slight increase in violent incidents.
According to the FBI report, Springfield’s overall crime rate decreased by 4% during the one-year period between 2019 and 2020. Property crimes, such as burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson, decreased by 7%, while violent crimes such as murder, nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault increased by 6%.
The city statistics mirror the national trend, where violent crime increased 5.6% while property crime decreased 7.8%.
In a year-to-year comparison, the number of murders, rapes and robberies dropped in Springfield between 2019 and 2020, the FBI reported. There were two fewer murders, 11 fewer rapes and six fewer robberies. The increase in violent crime comes from a spike in reported aggravated assaults, 104 additional incidents or an increase of 12%.
“Our Springfield police officers work hard every day to make the city a safer place for our residents and visitors,” commissioner Cheryl Clapprood said in a statement. “Over the past year, we have continued to work amid the COVID-19 pandemic and a large spike in gun violence in cities across the country. Our officers seized a city-record 275 illegal firearms in 2020.”
“Additionally, our Real-Time Crime Analysis Unit (R-TAC) continued to assist us with data-driven approaches to crime prevention by proactively putting our officers in the best positions to deter crime and provide real-time support in unpredictable situations,” Clapprood said. “With the support of Mayor (Domenic) Sarno, the strategies this department has implemented continue to help us address crime in the city and help us save lives.”
From 2010 to 2020, the overall crime rate in Springfield has dropped by 46%, with a 29% decrease in violent crime and a 51% cut in property crimes, the department said.
