Calling all true crime podcast fans: syracuse.com’s newest podcast series “The Condemned” combines local history with the macabre fascination of true crime stories.
From 1888 to 1965, New York state had the death penalty and in this time, five men from Onondaga County were sentenced to die in the electric chair for their crimes.
“The Condemned” podcast will tell the stories of these men, each sent down “the last mile” to be executed in a machine that was invented in Upstate New York. The first ever execution by electrocution was carried out at the Auburn Prison on August 6, 1890.
Electric chairs sent 1,000 or more volts through a person’s body for up to 3 minutes. Death by electricity was thought to be more clean and humane than hangings. The techniques developed in Upstate New York were adopted nationwide and are still practiced to this day.
This new method of execution was thought to be cleaner and more humane than hangings. For those that performed them, they were anything but.
