Twenty-seven confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported Sunday by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services — the state’s highest daily increase since the pandemic began.
Sunday’s cases include 12 in Anchorage, four in Wasilla, three each in Eagle River and Kenai, two in Homer and one each in Anchor Point, Soldotna and one case listed as other in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, according to DHSS.
One non-resident case was confirmed in a Dillingham area seafood industry worker, the department said in an online statement. There have been 21 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in non-residents.
Four of the cases reported Sunday were in people between ages 10 and 19, the state reported. Three cases were confirmed in people age 30-39, three in those 40-49 years old, another three people were between age 50-59, four cases were confirmed in people between age 60-69, two people between ages 70-79 and three people older than 80 contracted the virus.
There are now 460 total confirmed cases in Alaska. Ten Alaskans have died after contracting COVID-19. Of the total cases, 368 have recovered, according to the state. There have been 47 people hospitalized for COVID-19, although the state said there were no new hospitalizations Sunday. More than 53,000 tests have been completed in Alaska, DHSS said.
Gov. Mike Dunleavy and officials from DHSS, the Municipality of Anchorage and Providence Health and Services Alaska were expected to talk about the new cases in a briefing later Sunday, the state said.
The state has gradually loosened restrictions over the last month, and state officials have said there likely will be an increase in cases as more people go out in public.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
