Weekly Crime Report - County 17

The Gillette Police Department and Campbell County Sheriff’s Office issue daily press briefings to help keep local news outlets like County 17 up to date on area crime and ongoing investigations. In addition to our daily Bookings feature, we’re now issuing a weekly crime report to help keep you – our readers, Gillette and Campbell County residents – informed of relevant police activity in our community.

Here’s a brief report of some of the recent crimes and ongoing investigations in Campbell County, courtesy of briefings with GPD and CCSO:

• A 33-year-old Gillette woman called police after she heard a noise in her house and noticed a light was on just before 11 p.m. on Saturday. It is unknown if anyone was in the residence, and the investigation remains ongoing.

• More shoplifters were cited on May 15 for attempting to steal merchandise from Walmart. At 1:30 p.m., two 16-year-old girls attempted to lift just under $30 of merchandise and were later released to their parents and issued trespass warnings. Later in the afternoon, a 31-year-old female and her 28-year-old male companion were cited for over $100 in various items.

• A Gillette man was cited for breach of peace May 16 after using his vehicle to cut off his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle making her pull over in the 700 block of E. 4 Street just before 2 p.m. Once parked, the 34-year-old got out allegedly began hitting her windshield to get her to come out and talk to him. The 31-year-old female drove off and was followed by the ex-boyfriend for another block before she pulled over and he once again got out of his car to confront her. She drove off for a second time where she was able to evade him.

• Just before 3 p.m. on May 16, a 19-year-old woman reported that her 33-year-old stepfather had physically assaulted her in their residence in the 3900 block of Aerial Avenue. The teen said she had told her stepfather her plans to talk to her ex-boyfriend at which point her stepfather allegedly pinned her to the wall, grabbed her throat and her head hit the wall. When she fell on the floor, she said he continued to strike her. The 19-year-old female said she was defending herself when she hit him back and bloodied his nose. There was bruising on her eye and her throat to indicate injury, police said. When contacted, the stepfather reportedly said that he was out of town at the moment but admitted to striking girl. Charges are currently pending.

• Another dog fraud scam cost a 40-year-old Gillette woman and her husband $1,000. The incident was reported on May 16 after the woman said she had paid $1,000 for two puppies from a breeder in Littlefield, Texas, named Catherine Ann. The woman became suspicious after she received an email from a moving company in Kansas, asking for $550 more for insurance on the puppies. The true identity of Catherine Ann is unknown at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.

• In yet another dog fraud scam, an 18-year-old man reported on Wednesday that he has seemingly been cheated out of $3,670 sent to a  puppy breeder in Texas. Like the previous case, he, too, had been asked to pay an additional shipping fee in an undisclosed amount from someone claiming to be delivering the puppy at which point he believed he’d been scammed. There are no suspects at this time.

• A 38-year-old Gillette man was perplexed when he got into his car on Saturday morning just after 7 a.m. to find that someone had reportedly rifled through the center console and glove compartment of his 2007 Nissan while it was parked on 800 block of Sutherland Cove. Nothing was missing from the vehicle, however, but the contents of both comparments was left in a pile on the passenger seat. That same morning, two others reported that the same thing had happened them. One woman said her 2011 Dodge that was parked on the 2400 block of Angus and another man said his 2018 GMC had been entered while parked in the 3400 block of Fitzpatrick Drive. He said he’s not sure if anything is missing.

• Around 9 a.m. on May 16, an 86-year-old Gillette man reported that around $265 worth of belongings had been taken from his garage. He said that he believed the suspect entered the garage via the side door but that there appears to be no forced entry. Currently, there are no suspects and the investigation remains ongoing.

• A 35-year-old Gillette man called police to report that his 14-year-old niece went missing from his residence in the 2400 block of Foothills Blvd. The teen had allegedly told her uncle that she had gone to a friend’s house, which later proved to be untrue, at which point she was listed as a runaway. The police have not provided an update on whether the teen has returned home or is still missing.

• A witness reported a truck fire just before 7 p.m. last Saturday. CCSO deputies and CCFD firefighters arrived to find a 1966 Chevy pickup in flames. The 57-year-old female owner of the pickup said that her 33-year-old son had taken the truck from her house without permission. The son, who has a suspended license, fled the scene before authorities arrived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

• A 16-year-old female collided with a parked vehicle on 9th Street last Wednesday as she attempted to pick up a drink she’d dropped. She was transported to the hospital by EMS for neck pain and bruising injuries. Her condition remains unknown and it’s unclear if a citation is pending.

• On May 19, police responded to a report of a break-in at Hairerra Salon on Powder Basin Avenue. The 27-year-old owner of the salon arrived to work to find that the door handle had been tampered with and was no longer functional. It’s not clear if anything was stolen, but the owner is out $50 to pay for a new lock and handle. There were no suspects at the time of this reporting, and the case remains under investigation.

• A 15-year-old Gillette teen was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 7th Street and HWY 59 on Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. in the midst of a thunderstorm. The vehicle fled the scene after hitting the teen and thus far there are no witnesses. The boy refused medical treatment and was driven home by a neighbor.

• One Gillette woman’s summer is off to a rocky start after she reported her patio table and chairs missing from her back patio at her residence in the 200 block of Macallan Lane. Police interviewed neighbors who said they hadn’t seen anything. The total value of the furniture is around $100. There are no suspects at this time.
