Weekly Crime Report - County 17

The Gillette Police Department and Campbell County Sheriff’s Office issue daily press briefings to help keep local news outlets like County 17 up to date on area crime and ongoing investigations. In addition to our daily Bookings feature, we’re now issuing a weekly crime report to help keep you – our readers, Gillette and Campbell County residents – informed of relevant police activity in our community.

Here’s a brief report of some of the recent crimes and ongoing investigations in Campbell County, courtesy of briefings with GPD and CCSO:

  • A Gillette man woke up Saturday to find one of his Flipping 307 company work trucks missing from outside of his home in the 400 block of E. Laramie Street. He’d left the vehicle unlocked with the keys in the ignition, and someone had taken it for a spin. The truck was later found a few blocks away in the alley between Lakeside and Miller Avenue.
  • Later that same day, a 55-year-old woman reported that her $450 Dell Inspiron laptop computer had been stolen out of her 2016 Kia while parked at the Loaf ‘N Jug on HWY 59. The woman had left the doors unlocked and the computer was subsequently taken. There are no leads at this time.
  • The rear window of a Jeep Patriot belonging to Campbell County Health was smashed out Saturday as it sat in the lot at Burma and 4th Avenue. This Jeep is one of several company vehicles parked in the lot at the time, though the only one damaged. The incident is under investigation with no suspects currently named.
  • When a 19-year-old Gillette woman accidentally dialed 911 and promptly hung up Saturday evening, she was surprised when officers called back to see if she was okay. She was fine, she told them, and was currently at the Boot Hill Legendary Nightclub and Sports Bar. When police realized she was underage, they paid her a visit at the bar, where she consented to take a voluntary portable breathalyzer test. Though she tested at a o.00 blood alcohol level, she was nonetheless cited for being a minor inside of a bar.
  • When deputies recognized a driver and pulled him over at the Loaf ‘N Jug on HWY 59 Sunday afternoon on an outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled substance, they detected the smell of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A subsequent search was conducted in which deputies found 9.5 grams of marijuana. The 37-year-old male was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
  • Just after noon on Sunday, officers stopped to help a dog that was tangled in rope on the side of a truck in a parking lot. When officers discovered its owner had been incarcerated, the dog was taken into protective custody.
  • A 28-year-old woman was arrested for domestic battery after hitting a 25-year-old man Sunday night at 9:45 p.m. at a residence in the 600 block of S. Garner Lake Road. The man had scratches and bruises on his neck from the altercation that had turned physical.
  • Just before 11 a.m. Sunday, police responded to the 800 block of Lafayette Drive in response to a report of a man who had allegedly drank bleach. Police spoke to a 25-year-old woman at the residence who had bruises on her face and a broken tooth from allegedly being struck by her boyfriend. The man was arrested for domestic battery, though police found no evidence of anyone drinking bleach.
  • A man called police Monday morning to report that his black, Quickie wheelchair had been stolen form an apartment complex parking lot in the 1100 block of Church Avenue.  The police were able to locate a loaner wheelchair for the 39-year-old man until his stolen chair can be replaced.
  • Three teens and a 21-year-old male were cited for possession and use of a controlled substance after officers spotted a suspicious car in the teacher’s parking lot at Campbell County High School just before midnight on June 1. The four young men were found to be in possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.
  • Officers responded to the 300 block of Cottonwood Lane at around 1:30 a.m. Monday after receiving a report of a male and female moving items outside of the home and making a lot of noise. When officers responded, the male went back into the residence while officers talked to his 21-year-old female companion, who immediately became uncooperative, giving police a false name. The female was subsequently arrested for interference.

  • A 39-year-old mother called police on June 2 to report the there 14-year-old son had for the third time ran away from their home in the 3000 block of Watsabaugh Drive. No update has been provided.
  • Just after 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a 24-year-old woman called police to report that a male had opened her passenger car door to ask for a ride while she idled in the 200 block of S. Garner Lake Road. He walked away when she refused to give him a ride and she immediately contacted the police. Officers found the man who was acting strangely and showing symptoms of being under the influence of a stimulant. He admitted to police that he had been smoking methamphetamine and was arrested for use of a controlled substance.
  • Following several incidents last week of vandals spray painting graffiti on signs, cars and venues such as the skate park, more graffiti was reported on the HWY 59 overpass Tuesday with an estimated clean up of around $200. There are currently no suspects and the incident remains under investigation.
  • Several individuals were spotted on the roof of Conestoga Elementary School at 10 p.m. on June 3. The six or seven people spotted on the roof fled prior to deputies arrived and further search for suspects proved futile.
  • Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 78-year-old man emerged from Walmart to find his Honda Civic missing. It had been parked there for about two hours, he estimated, adding that he’d left the doors unlocked with the keys inside. Video surveillance showed a male with a small child getting into the car at 3:13 p.m. and driving away. The case remains under investigation.
  • A 24-year-old man reported a package missing Thursday from his mailbox on Lowery Ranch Road. Shipping confirmation confirmed the package had arrived to his home and was subsequently stolen. It’s valued at around $300, and currently, there are no suspects.
  • Deputies responded to a resident on Eagle Ridge Court Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. for a report of domestic violence. A 42-year-old female said her 38-year-old husband had kicked down a door, which had also hit her in the face causing a cut and swelling near her right eye. The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived, but he was later arrested for domestic violence and interfering with an emergency call.
  • Police received yet another report of a stolen vehicle after a woman reported her yellow 2008 Yamaha Raptor 700 4-wheeler missing from the backyard of her residence in the 5200 block of Winland Drive.  The 4-wheeler had been secured in her yard, but when she arrived home, she noticed the gate had been left open. It’s valued at  $4,000, and the incident remains under investigation.
  • A 62-year-old Gillette woman reported that an unknown person tried to use her information to file an unemployment claim through Wyoming Workforce Services. Officers contacted Workforce Service employees, who were able to terminate the claim before any funds were released. Apparently, this type of ID theft is happening all across the country, per Workforce employees.
  • A 21-year-old man claiming to be “really drunk and hungry” attempted to steal over $100 worth of food and other items from Smith’s Food and Drug Wednesday evening. Along with being arrested for public intoxication, he was also cited for shoplifting.
  • An 18-year-old woman joining the protests on the corner of HWY 59 and Boxelder Wednesday afternoon, reported that an unknown male driver in a white and green pickup ran up to her and threw a milkshake in her face.  Officers patrolled the area but were not able to locate the vehicle. There are no suspects currently.
