A man accused of exchanging gunfire with officers during an overnight standoff with Indianapolis police has died after being shot by a member of the SWAT team.

The suspect narrowly missed a sleeping toddler in a nearby home while shooting at police, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident began around 11:43 p.m. Saturday, IMPD said, when officers were called to a residence in the 3600 block of North Parker Avenue for a domestic disturbance.

In the initial call for help, a woman at the residence said her nephew had a gun, was standing on the porch and was intoxicated, according to an IMPD news release.

As police approached the home, officers saw a man step outside. Police said the man immediately began firing a gun at the officers.

One officer returned fire, causing the man to go back into the residence. IMPD SWAT members responded, along with the IMPD Crisis Negotiation team.

At least three nearby homes were struck by bullets from the suspect's gun, IMPD said.

"(The suspect's) bullets narrowly missed the occupants of one of the homes," the police department said. A 21-month-old child was sleeping with her grandmother in that home.

"After several hours of negotiations with the suspect to de-escalate the situation, he stopped communicating with the officers," IMPD officials said in a statement. "IMPD SWAT Team administered gas to the residence in efforts towards a peaceful resolution. IMPD Crisis Negotiation team continued to make several efforts to communicate with the suspect."

After negotiators learned of a possible medical issue inside the home, the SWAT team determined it was necessary to enter the residence, police said.

Once SWAT entered the home, the man shot at officers again. Officers returned fire, striking the man.

SWAT members immediately rendered aid to the suspect. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

Five IMPD officers fired their weapons in the incident, IMPD said. One of those who fired was the initial officer at the scene and the other four are members of the SWAT Team.

The officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave as is standard procedure in these incidents.

The shooting is being investigated by IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team. A separate and independent internal investigation will be conducted by IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit to ensure compliance with departmental policy.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is involved and will be consulted throughout the investigative process, police said.

In addition, the IMPD Firearms Review Board will determine whether the departmental use of force was within departmental compliance.
