MARTIN COUNTY — Despite the population in Martin County increasing, the area saw a 9.2 percent decrease in crime overall in 2019 compared to the previous year, according to information collected by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said he thinks it's because of the agency's teamwork with other South Florida law enforcement agencies.
When deputies hear of someone on the loose from Broward or Palm Beach counties, deputies are waiting for that person on Interstate 95 to intercept them and keep potential crime out of Martin County, Snyder said.
"I think that I would urge the community to be our eyes and ears and call us if you see something suspicious. That's what we're here for," he said.

Every year, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement compiles statistics in what it calls its seven major crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
The number of reported crimes in those categories overall in the state decreased by 4.6 percent in 2019, compared to the previous year.
According to FDLE's report, the county's population has been increasing yearly: 153,022 in 2017; 155,556 in 2018; and 158,598 in 2019 — an increase of just under 5,600 people in three years..

What's up, down
Countywide, the crime that saw the biggest uptick was motor vehicle theft, which went from 64 cases in 2018 to 85 cases in 2019. Other areas that saw an increase were murder that went from 3 in 2018 to 5 in 2019 and rape that went from 80 to 96 from 2018 to 2019.
"I learned a long time ago not to spike the ball and try and predict when crime goes down and try to not make excuses when it goes up," Snyder said.
The category that saw the biggest decrease was larceny, which is theft of personal property. It went from 1,810 cases in 2018 to 1,640 cases in 2019. Robberies decreased by 31 cases; aggravated assaults decreased by 35 cases and burglaries went down by 37 cases compared to 2018.
Crime in Stuart decreased overall by 16.2% in 2019 from the year before.
The agency investigated less aggravated assaults, burglaries and larcenies in 2019 than it did in 2018. There were a few more cases of rape, robberies and vehicle thefts. There were two murders in the city in 2019 and none in 2018.
"We've had less burglaries because we've had less transient crime coming from down south," Stuart Police Chief Joseph Tumminelli said. "We had about the same amount of decrease in crime overall this year as last year."
Stuart had 73 less burglaries in 2019 than in 2018.
"We had a decrease in burglaries, which is a good thing, you know, but you have to remain optimistic with these numbers because next year we could just get blown up," he said.
