The Gillette Police Department and Campbell County Sheriff’s Office issue daily press briefings to help keep local news outlets like County 17 up to date on area crime and ongoing investigations. In addition to our daily Bookings feature, we’re now issuing a weekly crime report to help keep you – our readers, Gillette and Campbell County residents – informed of relevant police activity in our community.
Here’s a brief report of some of the recent crimes and ongoing investigations in Campbell County, courtesy of briefings with GPD and CCSO:
- A Gillette woman reported a white minivan driving through her fence at her residence on Rustic Hills Road last Thursday, causing significant damage in an unknown amount. No suspects had been identified at the time of reporting.
- Twenty-two-year-old Caleb Hurtado was reported as an escapee when he failed to return to the VOA at his designated time last Thursday night. He had reportedly made a trip to Walmart and did not return by his appointed time of 6 p.m. Deputies contacted his friends and family in order to locate him but had no information on his whereabouts. He was entered in NCIC as an escapee. It’s unknown at this time if he’s since been found.
- A 19-year-old Gillette man reported that his 2007 Pontiac had been struck by a hit-and-run driver on June 25 at around 11 a.m. in the 800 block of Mountain View Drive, causing damages upwards of $1,000. The investigation is ongoing.
- Just after 4:30 p.m. last Friday, a 28-year-old female was seen stumbling through the parking lot at Walmart where she was almost hit by another vehicle. When officers caught up with her, she was snoozing on the floor just inside the doors of the grocery entrance. Officers helped her up, then arrested her given her excessive level of incoherency and intoxication.
- Several shoplifters were cited at Walmart over the weekend, including a 20-year-old female who attempted to use an UPC barcode in the amount of .50 cents to purchase an item valued at $75.58 as well as a 55-year-old male was attempted to steal over $200 in merchandise. Other incidents include a 36-year-old male who attempted to scan a UPC code for a price of $4.97 to purchase an item costing $34.97, a 26-year-old woman who was seen swapping less expensive tags on clothing valued at $64 and a 21-year-old male who fled the the store after taking $42.17 worth of merchandise, but who was later caught via video surveillance footage.
- Officers were called to break up a fight at Old Chicago between a 40-year-old man and a 23-year-old just before midnight Friday The older man was arrested for breach of peace after he reportedly grabbed the younger man by the throat and threw him to the ground. According to the police report, the 23-year-old was reportedly upset and yelling when the older guy left to go home. Witnesses said they saw the 40-year-old man grab the other fellow, and the two men were still fighting when officers arrived on scene.
- Last Saturday just after 3 p.m., a 51-year-old male reported that a 44-year-old female had hit him on the right side of his face following a verbal argument between the two at a residence on Ariel Ave. The woman reportedly took the man’s phone and fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers noted the injuries on his face were consistent with his allegations, and as of the time of the report, officers were still looking for the woman.
- Just before 10 p.m. Friday, a 52-year-old male and a 36-year-old male were found asleep in sleeping bags behind a residence in the 400 block of West 1st Street. When officers contacted them, they noticed signs of intoxication. Upon further investigation, officers discovered that one man had a warrant from failing to report to the detention facility for his sentence and the other was wanted for failing to report on multiple intoxication charges. Both men were arrested.
- In a confusing turn of events on Saturday, a 34-year-old Gillette man told police that his girlfriend’s Harley Davidson had been stolen intersection after police found him standing next to the wrecked bike on the corner of of 9th Street and Butler Spaeth Road. When questioned, he told officers that the motorcycle had been stolen and subsequently crashed by the thief who he claimed had fled on foot from the scene. Upon further investigation, officers discovered that the bike was not stolen and that the 23-year-old female owner had crashed the bike and fled the scene. The man was charged with falsely reporting a crime.
- An ardent Trump supportor in the 2500 block of Nogales Way reported his house had been egged. The 45-year-old resident told police he believed it was probably the work of the two teenage males down the street who had earlier taken down the Trump flag in his front yard. Clean up of the mess is valued at $50. It is unknown whether or not the teenagers have been contacted about the incident.
- A second report of a political sign being tampered with was reported by a 29-year-old Gillette woman in the 1200 block of Hilltop Court, who reported that her signs for Campbell County Commissioner candidate, Del Shelstad, had been taken from her front yard. The investigation is ongoing.
- In what can only be described as the work of a real-life Grinch, a Gillette woman in the 2800 block of Ridgecrest reported that someone had stolen her child’s silver and blue Trek bicycle out of the back of her friend’s truck. She reported that she had left the bike in the back of the truck overnight and was gone Sunday morning. The bike is valued at $3,000 and the investigation is ongoing.
- A 21-year-old male inmate at Campbell County Detention Center was charged with bodily injury to an officer when attempted to fight a detention center officer. The inmate was taken to the ground and cuffed after he attacked the officer from behind and scuffle for approximately for one minute.
- At 1 p.m. at Menards, employees discovered that an unknown person had passed a counterfeit $5 bill. Officers are currently viewing security footage and the investigation is ongoing.
- At 9:47 a.m. Wednesday, a 30-year-old female reported that an unknown person had created a duplicate Facebook account for her 88-year-old grandmother. She stated that her grandmother on the duplicate account had asked her for $500 in E-Bay gift cards. After she sent photos of the cards, she thought that it was strange for her grandmother to contact her on Facebook and reported this as a possible scam. The female reported a loss of $500. The investigation is ongoing.
- In a similar incident, a 55-year-old man reported that he was trying to purchase a trailer on E-Bay Motors website on June 30 and had paid $1,000 for the trailer in E-Bay gift cards. When it was due to be delivered, he received a second request for another $800 for insurance to deliver the trailer. Fearing this was a scam, he contacted GPD to report the fraud. There are no suspects and the investigation is ongoing.
