A Long Beach man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing another man in a possible hate crime, related to the victim’s gender identity, on Sunday night, police said.
At around 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stabbing near Chestnut Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, and found a man who had a stab wound to his upper torso, Long Beach police spokesman Brandon Fahey said. The victim told police that he had been stabbed by a man who approached him, brandishing a knife, he said.
The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Fahey said.
Investigators suspect the attack was a hate crime because of the suspect and victim statements, in addition to the suspect’s actions, Fahey said.
Police declined to say what the suspect said or did to the victim that could qualify as a hate crime, police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said, until the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday for filing consideration.
Officers found the suspect, 47-year-old Roland Myrick, shortly after the incident and he was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and a parole violation. He was being held at the Long Beach City Jail on $30,000 bail.
