We have a choice in dealing with the crime increases this summer. We can be proactive, spending some money to prevent a lot of very socially expensive crime. Or, we can wait until more crime happens, send in the police and hope they find some of the criminals, then spend a lot of money sending them to jail, sending them to court, and maybe sending them to prison from which they return to commit more crime (hard to get a job if you have a criminal record.)
If we have programs to pay people to work, they can supervise youth programs (freeing up their overburdened parents), help with COVID testing programs, clean up parks and roadsides and do other socially important work that is being ignored.
Probably, it would cost the city (and the people who suffer from crime) a lot less in the long run than trying to hire more police to try to prevent crime (they try, but are not very effective at that) or to try to catch criminals after the crime is committed (also not very effective, especially considering the high rate of recidivism.)
We need the police, but we also need to have programs that help keep people from becoming criminals in the first place. What is your choice?
