A 25-year-old Center Point man is behind bars after authorities say he carried out a two-day crime spree that targeted family members and a neighbor.

The spate of crimes began Wednesday when Birmingham police received a report that Darius Donnell Bennett had stolen a gun from a female cousin. Then, the following day, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 2000 block of Sixth Street N.E. in Center Point after being notified Bennett had gone to another family member’s home and fired shots at them.

Bennett fled from the home before deputies arrived at the scene, said sheriff’s Sgt. Joni Money.

On Friday morning – about 5 a.m. – Money said Bennett returned to the 2000 block of Sixth Street N.E., this time breaking into a neighbor’s home. Bennett reportedly smashed in the victim’s kitchen window, armed with a knife and a handgun.

When the victim saw the suspect, she tried to flee the home, but Bennett grabbed her and started beating her in the head, Money said. He then dragged the victim back into the home.

He took the victim’s car keys and debit card and forced the victim into her car. Bennett, Money said, drove her to her bank and forced her to withdraw cash from the ATM. He dropped her back off at home and left in her vehicle, also taking her cell phone before he fled.

About 2:30 p.m. Friday, deputies received another call from other members of Bennett’s family saying he had fired shots at them. Deputies arrived at the 1800 block of Bond Way N.E., but Bennett had already fled the scene, Money said.

Deputies began an extensive search for Bennett and were able to take him into custody near Polly Reed Road in Center Point.

Bennett was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 5:17 p.m. Friday. He is charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of second-degree aggravated assault, and one count each of first-degree kidnapping, burglary, robbery, theft of property and resisting arrest.

He remained held Monday with bonds totaling $317,800.
