Coronavirus in Brevard, Sept. 23: 3 newly recorded deaths, 76 cases; 74 deaths reported this month - Florida Today

Brevard County's death toll increased by three, although Wednesday's Florida Department of Health state report gives details about four deaths. As of Wednesday, the county has lost 284 people to the virus. Of those, 74 deaths were reported this month. Victims range in age from 25 to 103.

At least 171 deaths were connected to longterm care facilities such as nursing homes, up two from the previous day.

Brevard also added 73 new COVID-19 cases to its total of 8,578 — 8,551 residents and 27 nonresidents affected.

Here's info about the four latest deaths:

• an 88-year-old female whose case was not travel-related. It is not known whether she had contact with a known case. Her case was confirmed Sept. 4.

• a 77-year-old female whose case was not travel-related. It is not known whether she had contact with a known case. Her case was confirmed Sept. 8.

• a 73-year-old male whose case was not travel-related. It is not known whether he had contact with a known case. His case was confirmed Sept. 13.

• a 95-year-old female whose case was not travel-related. It is not known whether she had contact with a known case. Her case was confirmed Sept. 14.

Here's info about four deaths reported Tuesday:

• an 84-year-old male whose case was not travel-related. He did have contact with a known case. His case was confirmed Aug. 7.

• a 93-year-old male whose case was not travel-related. He did have contact with a known case. His case was confirmed Aug. 17.

• a 93-year-old female whose case was not travel-related. She did have contact with a known case. Her case was confirmed Aug. 19.

• a 79-year-old male whose case was not travel-related. He did have contact with a known case. His case was confirmed Sept. 1.

It's important to note the exact dates of these deaths are not made public by the department of health. Often there is a lag between the person's death and when it is reported by the Florida Department of Health. Also, a "case" is a person who tests positive for the first time, according to FDOH.

The total number of people tested in Brevard was 103,747 (95,110 testing negative), for a cumulative positive percentage rate of 8.27%. FDOH county report show on Tuesday 716 people tested negative, and there was a percent positive of 10.16% for new cases here. The median age of those testing positive here is 44. The median age statewide is 40.

FDOH data show 774 Florida residents have been hospitalized in Brevard since the pandemic began, up three from the previous day.

In total, 3,896 males and 4,646 females have tested positive for coronavirus.

According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Brevard had 45 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in its seven major hospitals, down five from the previous day. Of the 1,312 total staffed hospital bed capacity, 27% of beds were available in those hospitals. Of the 169 total adult ICU bed capacity, 24% were available.

FDOH data show the state added 2,590 cases Wednesday for a cumulative total of 690,499 cases (682,370 residents and 8,129 nonresidents affected; note, on Sept. 22, FDOH data show 8,133 nonresidents were affected). Statewide, there have been 5,163,125 people have been tested with 4,465,481 negative results for a cumulative percent positive of 13.37%.

Statewide, the death toll for Florida residents was 13,618 with 202 newly recorded deaths.

Total number of Florida residents hospitalized since the pandemic began increased to 42,941, up 170 from the previous day.
