More officers on the police force translate to lower crime, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said after reviewing the latest FBI crime statistics.
“I do see a trend because if you look at our violent crime rate is still down from what it was when I first took office and so is our property crimes rates are still down although they seemed to have a hit bottom. Last year was the low and they are starting to climb up again,” he said.
The Eunice Police force maxed out on the number officers in 2016 at about 3.1 officers per 1,000 residents.
“You’ll see how in 2010 we pretty much reached a level and it leveled off. In 2016, we maxed out on the number of police officers. That’s when we were almost at full capacity,” he said.
According to the FBI statistics, there were about 2.8 officers per 1,000 residents. In 2017, the number of officers dropped to slightly more than 2.8, went up in 2017 to about 3 officers per 1,000 residents and in 2019 dipped to 2.2 officers per 1,000 residents.
The more officers the department has, the proactive they can be in combating crime, he said.
“Believe me these people on the streets that are committing these crimes they know how many officers we have and they know when we are shorthanded,” he said.
“They know our officers. They know the schedules,” he said.
“So, we are watching them. They are watching us. We learn some of their habits and they learn ours. They are just as active in it as we are,” he said.
