CHICO — A husband and wife were arrested Sunday night after a fight that resulted in one person sustaining non-life threatening stab wounds and a short car chase. Chico Police Department officers say the two committed a hate crime.
The department said in a press release that Ryan Rash, 33, and his wife, Ashley Rash, 33, were arrested following a fight that occurred in the 100 block of East Lassen Avenue, where witnesses reported someone possessed a knife. They also reported that a white GMC Yukon attempted to run over someone before attempting to flee the scene.
Chico police officers arrived and attempted to stop the vehicle, before a short, one-block pursuit ensued. The vehicle, however, pulled into a parking lot and was unable to get out due to traffic in the area.
Officers contacted Ryan Rash, the sole occupant of the vehicle, and learned he was on post release community supervision.
While piecing together the events of the altercation, officers identified a person who reported Ryan Rash exited the GMC Yukon with a knife and inflicted two stab wounds on the person before fleeing the scene. The person also alleged Ryan Rash made racist comments during the assault.
According to the release, it is believed Ashley Rash engaged in a physical altercation with a second person.
Ryan Rash was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, evading police in a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, felon in possession of pepper spray and a hate crime. Ashley Rash was arrested on suspicion of battery.
