DRACUT — Dracut Police are now offering the public a service they hope no one ever has to take advantage of — online crime reporting.

The service is not for emergencies, which police stress. But the online system allows nonemergency crimes and incidents to be reported 24 hours a day online, with an approved police report being returned for free by email. The system also facilitates online records and discovery requests, and submitting questions to police.

“We are glad to be able to offer a new, convenient way for residents to report nonemergency incidents and crimes to the department so that they can be quickly reviewed and thoroughly investigated,” Deputy Chief Stephen Chaput said earlier this month. “It’s important to remember that residents should not use this form for emergencies, and should always call 911 if they are in need of urgent or immediate assistance.”

The system can be used to report things like lost property, thefts, illegal dumping, vandalism and animal complaints. Examples of things it should not be used for are any kind of incident or crime that is still in progress, incidents where there is a known suspect, or any incident involving injuries, guns or incendiary devices. The service should only be used to report incidents that occurred in Dracut.

Anyone with questions can call Dracut Police at 978-957-2123.
