A man was arrested and charged with a bias crime after he punched another man in the face at a MAX stop in Portland after inquiring about the man’s heritage, prosecutors announced this week.
On Dec. 15, the victim, an Asian American male, was waiting at the train stop near North Interstate Avenue and North Lombard Street, officials said.
The victim was wearing headphones when he was approached by a man, later identified as 38-year-old Daniel Hutchens.
The victim told investigators he took off his headphones to hear what Hutchens was saying.
“Are you Chinese?” Hutchens reportedly asked the victim. Before the victim had a chance to respond, Hutchens punched him in the face, prosecutors said, and fled the area.
Police located Hutchens nearby and arrested him. He was charged with a second-degree bias crime and harassment, officials said.
He was being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center in lieu of $4,000 bail.
