CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ohio reported a smaller change in coronavirus cases in K-12 students and staff this week, though cases have not slowed throughout the state.
For the week beginning Nov. 30 running through Dec. 6, schools reported 2,004 new cases in students and 1,511 new cases in staff. Reports showed an increase of 2,991 student cases and 1,736 staff for the week of Nov. 23 through Nov. 29.

The numbers reflect cases in all Ohio districts and schools, including private, charter and e-schools. Schools must report cases to the local health department, who then sends the numbers to the state. Since Sept. 7, when the state mandated this reporting, there have been 14,036 total student cases and 9,016 staff. Some schools may have included cases from before the Sept. 7 date, but that was not mandated.
A state collection of learning models throughout its public districts, last updated Dec. 3, showed a shift for schools to remote learning. Many officials are still debating how to approach in-person learning during the pandemic, reacting to holiday travel, staffing issues and local rises in cases. Regardless of whether students are in buildings, the district will still report numbers to the state if officials are notified of a case.
Some schools will maintain remote learning through January to avoid spread during the holiday season. The Ohio Education Association recommended that schools remain remote through Jan. 11, to give a 14-day “reset” period after Christmas.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced an updated coronavirus “protocol” on Thursday which recommends staying at home whenever possible, including remote work meetings. This protocol will last 21 days, through the holidays.
