What does this mean?
It means that, until further notice, UEFA will not be able to punish Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus for their attempts to form a breakaway Super League.
The three clubs were due to face potentially hefty punishments from UEFA, including large fines and potential exclusion from the Champions League.
The planned Super League had 12 founding members — but Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were the only three teams to refuse to renounce the plan and remain publicly committed to a new tournament.
The three European giants won a ruling from a Spanish court in April that they could not be punished by UEFA and FIFA. Their case was also notified by the judge in Madrid to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
The Madrid court injunction was delivered to UEFA offices on Saturday, via the Swiss authorities. This means that UEFA would have been liable to pay damages to the three clubs had they imposed punishments on them but then failed to overturn the injunction.
UEFA’s lawyers are in the process of appealing against that Madrid injunction in Madrid, as well as cooperating with the relevant Swiss authorities on the matter.
Do the three clubs still support a Super League?
Yes.
They have refused to withdraw their official support for a Super League and last week all three clubs released a joint statement accusing UEFA of a “flagrant breach of the decision of the courts of justice” and said “we either reform football or we will have to watch its inevitable downfall”.
What about the six Premier League teams?
All six Premier League clubs involved in the breakaway project — namely Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur — withdrew from the competition 48 hours after its announcement following widespread backlash.
Earlier on Wednesday, The Athletic reported that the six English clubs who agreed to join the Super League have agreed to pay a combined fee of £22 million as part of a settlement with the Premier League.
The clubs have also been told that they will be hit with individual £25 million fines and a 30-point deduction should they agree to join a breakaway Super League in the future.
The Premier League said in a statement: “As a gesture of goodwill, the clubs have collectively agreed to make a contribution of £22 million which will go towards the good of the game, including new investment in support for fans, grassroots football and community programmes.”
