According to a recently released Gallup poll, Americans’ support for stricter gun control measures has fallen from 67 percent in 2018 to 52 percent, its lowest level since 2014, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The results come as the number of violent crimes, including murder, has risen—and after Americans purchased a record number of guns in 2020. The percentage of Americans who support a ban on the possession of handguns fell to 19 percent, the lowest rate ever recorded by Gallup.
Public opinion on gun control is historically volatile. Support dropped in 2013 four months after the Newton, CT school massacre. In 2011, support for stricter gun measures plummeted to what was then a record low of 26 percent.
Meanwhile, the number of homicides in the U.S. rose nearly 30 percent in 2020 from the prior year to 21,570, the largest single-year increase ever recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and 88 percent of U.S. gun owners now say they own a gun to protect themselves against crime, up from two thirds in 2005. Some 31 percent of U.S. adults say they own a gun, a number that has remained little changed for more than a decade.
