Violent crime was down in New York City last month, but criminals stayed busy when it came to robbery and assault.
Murder dropped across the city by 10 percent compared to last year, while shooting incidents slipped nearly 5 percent.
Yet crime overall climbed 11 percent compared to October 2020, according to the New York Police Department, fueled by a 16 percent rise in robbery and 14 percent jump in felonious assault.
The police department credits reductions in shootings and homicides on its work to build multiple long-term cases rather than focusing on individual arrests. It’s also ramped up gun arrests across the city, making more than 3,800 such collars through the end of October compared to just under 3,450 at this point in 2020.
Closer to home, no murders or rapes were reported within the 50th Precinct in a 28-day period through Nov. 7. Robberies and assaults climbed up, as have grand larceny reports. But burglaries are down.
Overall, crime is up 11 percent in the precinct over the last 28 days with 98 total incidents, compared to 88 during the same period last year.
Mother shot in Marble Hill dispute
The 50th Precinct reports just one shooting crime in the past month, and that likely has come from a shooting in Marble Hill last week that struck a mother pushing her toddler in a stroller.
Police arrested Cody Ball, 27, from the Upper West Side, accusing him of being involved in an incident where he and another man allegedly accosted a 22-year-old just before 6 p.m., on Nov. 4, near West 225th Street and Broadway. The dispute quickly turned violent with guns drawn, and one of the men actually pulling the trigger.
The woman was taken to nearby NewYork Presbyterian Allen Hospital to treat her leg injury, but police say her injuries are not life-threatening.
Bell was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with attempted murder, robbery, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a firearm.
Police continue to look for his alleged accomplice. He is said to be between 25 and 30, standing between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10, and weighing between 170 and 200 pounds.

Two men are in custody after a raid by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration last week netted $4 million worth of heroin, along with weapons and ammunition.
DEA agents stormed an apartment at 5775 Mosholu Ave., at about 8 p.m., on Nov. 4, arresting Harris Wilson Sanchez, 54, and Hinguenbert Deleon, 36.
Agents say they found 28 pounds of heroin in the North Riverdale apartment, along with three pistols and 200 cartridges of ammunition. They also seized a money counter and a kilo press.
