Idaho State Police upgrade crime dashboard
The Idaho State Police’s newly redesigned Crime in Idaho dashboard allows users to explore data housed within the Idaho Incident-Based Reporting System, the state’s repository of law enforcement data on criminal incidents.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Idaho Statistical Analysis Center and the Idaho Uniform Crime Reporting Program, both of which fall under the state police’s jurisdiction.
With the Tableau-based interactive dashboard, users can explore crime data from 2005 to 2020, sorting by district, offense and year. Data is shown in maps and charts, with trend on victimization rates also displayed.
"This dashboard will help those from local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, and members of the media and public to see highly customizable views and quick trend analysis of what's happening in their area," said Thomas Strauss, principal research analyst with the Idaho Statistical Analysis Center.
Currently the dashboard features data on crimes against persons and drug and alcohol offenses, but more categories and topics are in the works, including crimes against property and society as well as intimate partner violence and sexual violence.
"We think this more visual presentation of important crime trend data will make that data easier to understand so more Idahoans can be better informed and make better decisions about safety in their community." Strauss said.
