The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 433 new coronavirus cases in Alabama on Monday, the second lowest daily case total in the last two weeks. It follows a weekend in which new case numbers began to fall slightly.
The state added 543 cases on Saturday and 472 on Sunday, a stark contrast to the previous weekend, when the state added 1,902 cases, including Alabama’s only 1,000-plus case day last Sunday.
The lower case counts over the last several days caused the state’s 7-day average for new cases to fall Monday for the fifth consecutive day. The average now stands at 591.3, the first time it’s been below 600 since June 11. The state also saw testing numbers dip a bit over the weekend, as the daily number of tests reported by ADPH has fallen each of the last four days, down to 4,432 on Monday.

Jefferson County reported 234 cases since Saturday, including Monday’s numbers. That was the highest total for any county during that time. It pushed Jefferson past Mobile County. Jefferson now has the second highest cumulative case total in the state, behind only Montgomery.
Mobile added 115 cases over the last three days. Both Jefferson and Mobile now have over 3,000 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic - Jefferson with 3,025 and Mobile with 3,014.
Montgomery County added the second most weekend case totals at 148 over the last three days, and still has the most cumulative virus cases in Alabama with 3,254.
Montgomery’s new case totals have actually slowed a bit, since setting records over the last two weeks. It went through a stretch where it added over 100 cases in five of eight days, included 146 on June 11 - nearly the same as its case count over the last three days. Jefferson County, which is nearly three times larger than Montgomery, has been adding cases at a faster rate over the last few days.

Parts of the Black Belt, which has been hit hard by the virus, are still adding new cases at a disproportionate rate. Between Saturday and Monday, Dallas County, home to Selma, added 50 new cases. That’s a rate of 13.4 cases per 10,000 people over just three days. Lowndes County, just west of Montgomery, added 11.3 cases per 10,000 over the weekend. Lowndes has more than 430 cumulative cases per 10,000, by far the highest in the state. Lowndes and Dallas two were the only two counties to top 10 cases per 10,000 people over the weekend.
Five counties - Cherokee, Cleburne, Randolph, Marengo and Choctaw - added no new cases over the weekend.
